Today was a day of firsts. We culled two roosters (we actually means my DH) I helped once the birds looked like meat. That took quite a bit of time since this was our first time. C said he would just as soon work overtime and pay for natural free range all ready processed birds. So, he's definitely not sold on us doing it ourselves yet. We also took care of Yolkie, he was also a roo and had lots of issues, so he has now went on to the great Hen house in the sky.
Let's see that's two new things, what was the other thing, hmmm, OH YEAH! Now I remember I found our first egg!!!!!!!!! Our Buff's will be 17 weeks on Monday and already an egg. I am soooo Eggcited!
Here it is right where I found it. It took great restraint to not pick it up right away. (I had to run back to the house and get my camera)

Yay! Congratulations! First eggs are SO exciting...and, we have something in common...my Buff Orpington, "Spongebob", laid her first egg at 17 weeks, too!! :-)
Wow, how eggstra eggciting! Chickens are so much fun. They each have their very own personalities.
YAY!! Congratulations. First eggs are wonderful, and you've been very creative with yours LOL! I think the layer is madam in your first photo. The one with bum to camera. The little girl in the background is still weeks off laying by the look of her. When they're ready, their comb and wattles go deep red and get bigger, just like madam's. Enjoy your eggs.
BTW, the eggs will get bigger the more she lays. Sometimes you might get one with a double yolk or with no shell. They do these strangenesses until their settle into laying.
Woo hoo!!! An egg. Thats so exciting. An egg, an egg, an egg, an egg......
Wonderful! I love the ways you photographed your egg! I am smiling.
Wohoooo!!! Your very first egg! Congrad's to you! That's a great feeling.
I am seeing scrambled eggs in your future. LOL!
Danni: Thanks, if you couldn't tell I took inspiration from your first egg post. ;0)
Sharon: Mine haven't really shown me that yet. Maybe soon.
Rhonda Jean: Thank you, I was soooo excited I almost cried. Thanks for the info.
Marc: Woot! Woot! Can't wait til it's eggs.
Gail: Thanks, Farmgirl_dk inspired me. She did something similar in her first egg post.
Barbara: Lots and lots of scrambled eggs.
Your pics are hysterical! I liked the horse about to smash it.
We have a local processor who charges $2.25 per bird, so maybe if you have someone near you, you could raise the roosters and splurge on the processing.
All I can say is if YOU don't want to have to home process.....don't tell him about making his own plucker. Of he catches wind of that...like all males...he'll be all into it and next year you'll be ordering hundreds of birds just so he can play with his new homemade gadget! ;)
And Congrats again on the egg! Have you tried it yet?
Thanks sugarcreekstuff. I really liked that one too. But my fav by far is the yarn nest, it's the knitter in me. I have a somewhat local source for free range chicken. But I'll have to keep that in mind for the next time.
Angie: I've told him already about your homemade plucker and I can see his wheels a turnin. LOL Nope haven't tried it yet. Don't ya know I've got it in a shrine. LOL
I love all your funny and creative First Egg photos! The horse stomp was my favorite followed by the yarn egg, and then the 4x4 egg and jewel egg.
Congrats!
How exciting!!
