Finally... a chicken post

He's so handsome!

This is Yolkie, with her leg pulled up. Yesterday morning I noticed she was limping.

She won't put any weight on it. Any ideas? I've looked at it and it seems fine.

A chicken video for your enjoyment.

Hey Mim! They're looking great!! Has rooster crowed yet? I think you may be right and you have a hen with a little more going on than the others. In our flock of all buffs we had a few with much larger combs and wattles. (Of course, it could be a subordinate roo too....but I'm still leaning toward a pullet.)

As for your limper, just watch her, it's really all you can do. What I would be watching for is bumblefoot. You'd be looking for a sore, a round lump on the pad of her foot. Sometimes though, birds hurt themselves jumping down from something and after a few days they're good as new. Hope that's the case for little yolkie! :)

One of mine was limping, the bottom of her foot was swollen and hot. There was a scab so I pulled it off (tweezers helped) and put antibiotic cream on it right before roosting at night. I did it a couple of nights, it didn't take long and she was good as new.

Nice flock! My sister raises chickens but all the roosters are turned loose outside and she lets the hens set when they want to. Needless to say Marcy has quite a color combination going on.

Angie: He has not, I think he's tried, he sounds like an old car trying to turn over. I sure hope you are right and it's not more Roos. Thanks for the info. I had looked up bumblefoot but it doesn't seem to have anything on there. Let's just hoped it is from a jump.

sugarcreek: That definetly sounds like it was bumblefoot, sounds like you took care of it right away.

Gail: Thanks, sounds like your sister's flock has personality. I kind of wish I would have went with a few different breeds. Maybe in the future?

Over the summer, one of my Barred Rocks, "Boppity", began limping and resisted putting weight on one of her feet. I, too, could not find any visible signs trauma or injury. So, I just watched and waited and she's absolutely fine now. I concluded that she must've jumped down from her perch and strained/sprained something. All better now. :-)

Loved the "drive by". ha ha ha

Hi Mim!

Thanks for adding me to your followers list. I saw your name there today and was so excited! You see I had lost your blog link a couple months ago...and now here I am again, thanks to you! Yay!

Your girls are so pretty! Sorry about Yolky, but I bet she'll be as good as new in a few days.

Several of my chickens have had the 'limps', either due to us accidentally stepping on them as we enter the coop, getting their feet under the gate or claws stuck in the gate mesh (crazy birds will fly up at the gate when they see me coming, so excited for goodies! lol).
Sometimes the 'limps' are just caused by a strain from landing funny, too.

I enjoyed hearing your friendly voice in the video, too.

Glad to be back! :)

Danni: Well, I hope that it's not anything serious. Farm Mom suggested mites and I have now lubed chicken legs. LOL I will post about Yolkie soon.

Lisa: Glad to see you're back! Thanks, I think they are pretty too. Although I'm starting really starting to think that one hen is a roo.

whitestone: Thanks! I'm happy I could bring back some memories for you. Thanks for stopping by.
